Surfing made simple!

A Great recession-busting initiative has landed Vince Hayes a crack job - as Australia's first professional body-surfing coach.

Since September, Vince, 41, has been body-surfing coach at the luxury Hyatt Regency Coolum, on Queensland's Sunshine Coast, tutoring its world-wide clientele in a seemingly long-lost art.
Indeed, he is quick to pour sold water on the idea that surf enjoyment in the 90s means a high-tech board or boogie board.

"To me, bodysurfing is more enjoyable than board-riding. It's less glamorous - because you don't go round with the image of having a surfboard on top of your car," the former lifeguard says.

"That it's exhilarating and as physical, and I ______ there's a greater ________ achievement. You're _______ out into the water without your security blanket!"

When his lawn-mowing business slowed a little during winter last year Vince activated his plan.

He approached the Hyatt's general manager, Maurice Holland, who instantly declared it a goer.
"Of course, they wanted to know my credentials at first," says Vince. "Apart from my general sports coaching certificates, I have been a member of Coolum Beach Life Saving Club for 20 years, I have my bronze life-saving medallion and am qualified in first aid.

" You don't have to be Grant Kenny or Guy Leech to do what I'm doing. My experience in the surf is virtually a life-time.

"I grew up in Brisbane and learnt basic body-surfing from Dad down at nearby Redcliffe. Learning from your parents was the way you did it in days."
